World Health Organization Raises Concern Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Less than 10% of patients that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy can access them, caution the World Health Organization as it publishes its inaugural guidance on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now classified as obese, it is advocating for broader and more equitable availability to GLP-1 medication.

According to projections, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidance recognises that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be treated with holistic and continuous treatment," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are significant barriers to universal availability to the jabs that can help people shift considerable weight, says the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Despite the current most favorable scenario, the production of these medications might only reach about 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The advice calls on countries and companies to increase access, by measures including patent sharing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is set to lapse in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Function

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and boost satiety so users eat less.

Patients commonly begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Studies points to users may put most of the weight back on within a year of stopping the treatment, as their typical appetite resume.

Being carrying excess weight increases your chance for experiencing health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some cancers.

Excess weight impacts people in all nations and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
