The Substance Film
The filmmaker's bold critique addresses the demanding standards for female beauty as well as the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore offers a brilliant portrayal playing Elisabeth, an aging film star demoted to hosting a workout series on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and terrifying process called the Substance. This creates a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a progressively toxic connection between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

This Supernatural Story
The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities with this clever ghostly tale filmed completely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel
This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor embraces his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to visit a festive event on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to spy on the alleged criminal, his unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, evening, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has rendered the children on edge. When Finney gets captured by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he anticipates a terrible outcome. But the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with eerie communicators giving advice, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple begin capitalizing on the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet Chastain succeeds to show Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
This week's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a intelligence thriller as tight as the polo necks worn by Michael Fassbender's UK spy.
