New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
