The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
